Rough Sailing In The Gulf Of Mexico

Something else to consider when it comes to cruising fromNew Orleans is the roughness of the trip. While many cruises will eventuallymake their way to the Caribbean, coming from New Orleans they must first travelthrough the Gulf of Mexico.

During certain times of the year, the Gulf of Mexico can bea much rougher ride than sailing through the Caribbean. This is due to any coldfronts coming across the Gulf. For that matter, cruising in the winter out ofNew Orleans might come with some especially rocky riding.

This isnt so much a safety issue, as the waters in the Gulfarent going to rock enough to tip your cruise ship. But if you get seasickeasily, or are would rather ride through smoother waters, its certainlysomething to consider.

Due to Hurricane Ida‘s ravagement of The Big Easy, Carnival Cruise Line has been forced to cancel a voyage, which was scheduled to depart New Orleans on Sunday, that would have been the first ocean cruise to set sail from the city in nearly 18 months.

The 2,980-passenger Carnival Glory had planned to become the first vessel to depart from the Crescent City on Sunday, September 5, one week after the Category 4 storm struck the city. As of today, electricity has been restored in some areas, but the vast majority of the metro remains without power, according to NOLA.com.

The Carnival Glory had been slated to sail a seven-day voyage from New Orleans to the Bahamas, with calls in Bimini, Freeport and Nassau, The Points Guy reported. In a statement, Carnival told the outlet that the decision to cancel Sundays sailing was made after local officials conducted a post-storm assessment of the area.

The channel to the cruise terminal remains closed, and New Orleans is under emergency management, Carnival wrote in its statement. We will provide our guests and travel advisor partners with additional information as it becomes available.

PublishedSep 7, 2021 2:16 PM by The Maritime Executive

Two cruise ships have joined in the efforts to aid New Orleans and Louisiana in the recovery from the damage left behind from Hurricane Ida. The cruise industry has a long history of working with both public and private enterprises in these situations and currently two ships have been chartered to act as housing for the relief efforts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency contracted with Carnival Cruise Line for a short-term charter of the cruise ship Carnival Glory. The 110,000 gross ton cruise ship had recently arrived in the New Orleans area and was due to resume cruises in September, but the commercial trips had been postponed in the wake of the hurricane. The cruise ship rode out the hurricane by diverting west towards Mexico.

The Carnival Glory arrived at the Port of New Orleans on Friday, September 3, and underwent a required U.S. Coast Guard inspection. According to the cruise line, the ship began provisioning food, water, and materials to prepare to house up to 2,600 hospital workers, first responders, city and utility workers, and other emergency personnel. The ship will stay in port and serve as emergency housing for frontline workers directly involved in the city’s infrastructure recovery and healthcare needs.

More cruise ship operators are setting plans for sailings from U.S. ports in the coming months, including the four lines that left regularly from the Port of New Orleans before the COVID-19 pandemic.

That’s offered some hope to local port and hospitality officials, even if all of the ships that once plied the Mississippi River before heading towards tropical destinations aren’t yet staging a return locally.

Cruise ship traffic from the port resumed last month, when Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Glory restarted its Caribbean cruise sailings from Sep. 19, a few weeks later than expected because of Hurricane Ida.

On another positive note, a second Carnival vessel, the Carnival Valor, will resume sailing from Nov. 1 with four- and five-day round-trip cruises to Cozumel and Progreso in Mexico, Vance Gulliksen, Carnival spokesman confirmed. Like its sister ship Glory, the Valor will be running at about 70% passenger capacity, which normally is just under 3,000 on each ship.

Since 2017, Carnival Corporation has been on probation, after having been found to “illegally dumping oil into the ocean from its Princess Cruises ships and lying about the scheme.” Carnival Corporation also had to pay a $40 million fine. The Court summary states that “Princess was convicted and sentenced in April 2017, after pleading guilty to felony charges stemming from its deliberate dumping of oil-contaminated waste from one of its vessels and intentional acts to cover it up”.

In June 2019, Carnival Corporation and its Princess subsidiary agreed to pay a criminal penalty of $20 million for further environmental violations that include dumping plastic waste into the ocean. Princess Cruises had already paid $40 million over prior deliberate acts of ocean pollution.

She features a host of new amenities including Guys Burger Joint, Alchemy Bar, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Tequila Bar and the EA Sports Bar.

In celebration of the ships return to New Orleans, Carnival Cruise Lines donated USD$15,000 to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, which will go towards rebuilding the lives and communities of the St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes following Hurricane Isaac in August.

Because of Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac, August 29th is indelibly etched in our minds as a day of heartache and heroes, United Way of Southeast Louisiana president and CEO Gary Ostroske said.

We thank Carnival for being a corporate hero. With Carnivals support, United Way can help more people in more ways than any single charity.

Carnival Cruise Lines senior cruise director John Heald was on hand in New Orleans to present the cheque.

Todays reception went very well and what an honour it was to present a check for $15,000 to the United Way of South east Louisiana, Mr Heald wrote on his Facebook page.
